Project Title: Investigating the Influence of Socio-Cultural Barriers on the Rehabilitation of Women with Physical Disabilities
Abstract of Project :
About 650 million people in the world are disabled out of which 520 million live in developing countries, and 300 million are women (Human Rights and Disability Report, 2002). The inability of Indian women with disabilities to access intervention programs is a reflection of various socio-cultural barriers. The motor disability counts the second highest percentage of disability (27.9%, Census report 1991, India), but is perhaps the most neglected. My Fulbright project investigates socio-cultural factors influencing women with physical disabilities in order to provide gender and culture specific positive rehabilitation models.
